Speaker: Charles Chen
Senior Scientist at AstraZeneca
Scientific Co-Founder of Cytolytix Limited
Visiting Lecturer at King’s College London

Abstract: Charles will share his journey, spanning from his undergraduate years to his current position in the industry. During graduate school, he began his Ph.D. studies at Johns Hopkins University, becoming the first student in a new Assistant Professor’s team. In his fourth year, Charles relocated with his supervisor to King’s College London and successfully completed his PhD degree in the UK. He then pursued postdoctoral training at MIT, focusing on peptide therapeutics research and the development of innovative tools for drug discovery. Eventually, Charles made the decision to transition into the job market and join the industry.

In this talk, Charles will recount his experiences as a PhD student, discuss the job search process, and shed light on life as a scientist in Big Pharma. The discussion will cover several common industry-related questions, such as: (1) How can you increase visibility within Big Pharma? (2) How do you maintain work-life balance as a scientist? (3) How can leadership skills be honed? (4) How do you establish professional connections and networks?

Towards the end, there will be a Q&A session, providing an opportunity for further discussion and allowing Charles to share his expertise and experiences with the audience.
